Camperoos

My three year olds first camping experience was the Great Aussie Camp Out last night.  He absolutely loved it.  We camped in the backyard pitching the tent together, enjoyed toasted marshmallows on the campfire and read bedtime stories by torchlight.  GACO is a wonderful program and with such a positive first experience I am sure there wil be more camping adventures beyond the backyard!!!

Camping at Colo: The Last Pristine River in NSW

Hi there, I've only just found out a out the GACO and sadly have something else planned that I cant change for a camping trip. Thought I'd be the first to post a camping story though. We camped at Colo River on the upper Hawksebury Region a few weeks ago with some other families with small children. We also took our dog Rhubarb. We had a fantastic time, cooked damper on the campfire and swam in the lovely child friendly shallow river. Can highly recommend it. We wrote a detailed account in our blog. CanTeen WA

CanTeen is the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer. For the first time ever, we took a group of young people camping for a night. We started with an afternoon of bushwalking. We sat and watched the peaceful sunset. We dined by the open fire. We made banana boats and orange cakes. We got up at the crack of dawn. We climbed some high ropes. And then, we bushwalked some more. Great weekend had by all.

How it started for me

My first camping adventure was building a hut out of fruit boxes (in the days when they were made of timber) and covering them with Dad’s paint sheets (in the days when they where made of cloth). I slept on the back lawn in outer suburban (in the days when it was outer suburban) Melbourne. I joined Cubs and went on to have many great outdoor adventures with the Scout Movement over fifty years. I camped in Victorian mountains, South Australian desert, at various places across the Nullarbor (two trips) and the Overland Track in Tassie.  My children came to enjoy the outdoors, camping out at Easter for over twenty years and scores of other times.  Now their children are being introduced to the outdoors. Three year old Rose has several nights in a tent and seven-month old Hoth, who is fascinated by trees and shadows and sound, has yet to spend his first night out. Don

Wagin's Camp Out

Caravans, motorhomes, cars and tents, a motorbike with sidecar and tent and even a pair of gophers, started rolling in from thursday afternoon for this fantastic event.

By Saturday evening we had 81 people registered.  After a sausage sizzle meal, a big screen was set up under the stars for the adults to watch a movie.  Weather was perfect, if a little cold, but the night was enjoyed, especially the campfire after the movie, some enjoyed the campfire till 2am.

Whilst the adults were relaxing the children had their own event, a scavenger hunt with a challenging list of items to find by torchlight, which took them over a fair area of the Wagin Showgrounds.  Much laughter and enjoyment for the littlies!  All enjoyed the event and want to come back next year with lots more of their friends.  This item is submitted by me as one of the organisers on behalf of the Shire of Wagin
