Fire Lighting Safety Tips
Fires for some campers are what make the camp experience more authentic. Each time a fire is lit there is a danger to the participants and the surrounding areas and the environment. Campfires easily get out of control and no matter how experienced the fire lighter is it only takes a change in the weather for it to become out of control.
If you want to light a fire there are organisations that you should ask for information before starting. Below are lists of organisations for info depending on where you are camping for the Great Aussie Camp Out.

Fire restrictions are varied from place to place throughout Australia. The average finishing date of restrictions is at the end of April. To check the dates for fire restriction in camping areas contact your local council or CFA for further information.
Lighting a Fire
- To make a safe fire: constructing it in a pit surrounding it with rocks, with a 3m clearing is the safest method
- Always watch the fire, do not walk away from the fire when it is still alight
- Fuels to use: paper, old timber, dry twigs for starter, and logs to keep it going.
- Fuels not to use: gas, petrol’s, metholated spirits.
